Golf Bunker Sand
Bunker sand is judged on how it plays and how it drains. Both come down to a clean, consistently graded sand — and it has to be the same sand every time it is topped up.
What a bunker asks of its sand
A bunker has to drain after rain, hold a playable surface that a ball sits on rather than plugs into, and stay in place on the faces. It also has to look right against the turf. Course superintendents specify bunker sand closely — particle size range, grain shape, colour, and often a measured value for how far a ball penetrates — because a bunker that is too soft, too firm or too slow to drain is a complaint from every golfer who lands in it.
What matters in the sand
Cleanliness: silt and clay in the sand crust the surface, hold water and stain. A washed sand is the starting point. Grading: a sand within the specified fraction, with the fines removed, drains and plays predictably; a dried, screened sand can be held to a tighter fraction than a moist one. And consistency: a course tops bunkers up for years, and every top-up should match what is already there.
