Mortar, render and tile-bed sands are judged on cleanliness and consistency. A clean, dry, evenly graded sand works the same in every mix.
Why the sand matters
Sand is most of a mortar or render by volume, so it decides how the mix behaves. Silt and clay coating the grains raise the water demand, weaken the bond to the brick or tile, and make the workability swing from batch to batch. A clean sand with those fines removed gives a mix that spreads, holds its shape on the trowel and bonds reliably. The grading governs the finish: a well-graded sand packs tightly and leaves a dense, even surface.
Why dry and sized
A dry sand mixes to the same water content every time — the water is what the tradesperson adds, not what came with the sand — and it can be screened accurately, because moist sand clumps and blinds a screen. That is what gives a render its consistent finish, a tile bed its even thickness and a mortar its predictable workability. Manufacturers of bagged mortar, render and adhesive need the same thing for the same reasons: a dry sand blends with cement and stores without hydrating.

Kiln-Dried Sand — quartz sand washed to remove silt and clay, dried in our kiln and screened to a fraction between 0.3 mm and 6 mm — supplied for mortar, render, tile beds and screeds, and to manufacturers of pre-blended products. Produced on one site at Talgai, Queensland, so the sand is the same from one delivery to the next.
