Building Pads, Sub-grades & Hardstands
Before a slab, a road or a hardstand is built, the ground under it is built up with fill that compacts predictably. That is what select fill is for.
Why controlled fill
A structure needs a platform that will not settle, heave or hold water. Natural ground rarely provides one, so a controlled fill is placed in layers and compacted to a density set by the project engineer, with testing to prove it. The fill has to be uniform — the same material, layer after layer — or the compaction and the testing mean nothing.
What matters in the fill
Consistency first: a screened granular material of even character compacts the same way every time. Drainage: water in the platform is what causes movement, so a free-draining fill is preferred. And workability: a material that spreads and compacts readily with standard plant.
