What sand is best for a horse arena?

A washed sand with silt and clay removed for dust control and drainage, medium to coarse in grading, with a grain shape that gives the surface stability. MRP Washed Sand is coarse, sub-rounded and washed, and is supplied for arena surfacing on its own or as the base for an additive surface.

How deep should arena sand be?

Surface depth depends on discipline and whether an additive is used; a common range for a sand surface is roughly 75 mm to 150 mm over a prepared base. Confirm with your arena builder.

How much sand does an arena need?

Area multiplied by depth. A 20 m by 60 m arena at 100 mm is 120 cubic metres. Contact us with the dimensions and we can advise on tonnage.

Do you supply the base as well as the surface?

Yes. Select fill is supplied for the compacted base beneath the drainage and surface layers.

Yes. Silt and clay are the main source of dust; washing removes them, and a washed sand also drains rather than sealing when wet.

Yes. Washed sand is the base component of most additive surfaces. The additive supplier will specify the sand grading they recommend; contact us with it.
