Turf Root Zones & Top Dressing
Turf establishes on what is underneath it. A root zone that drains, resists compaction and feeds the roots is the difference between a lawn that takes and one that struggles.
What a root zone has to do
Drain, so water moves through rather than pooling at the surface. Resist compaction under foot and mower traffic, so roots can penetrate and air can reach them. And hold enough moisture and nutrient between waterings for the turf to establish. Heavy clay fails the first two; a straight sand fails the third.
Why a sandy loam
A sandy loam sits between: it drains and stays open like a sand, but holds more moisture and nutrient. Blended with organic matter the reserve is larger again, and it supplies nutrient as it breaks down. The blend is spread to depth, levelled and lightly consolidated, and rolled turf is laid straight onto it.
Top dressing
The same blend, spread thinly over an existing lawn or field and worked into the surface, levels low spots, improves drainage in the upper profile and gives worn areas a medium to recover into. It is routine maintenance on sports turf.
