Dam, Pond & Dewatering Water Clarification
Cloudy water is fine sediment that will not settle on its own. A flocculant makes it clump and drop, so the water above clears.
Why water stays cloudy
The finest clay and silt particles are so small that they stay suspended almost indefinitely — the water in a farm dam after rain, a settling pond, or an excavation being pumped out can stay muddy for weeks. Left alone it cannot be discharged, reused or, on a farm, used for stock and irrigation without fouling.
What a flocculant does
A flocculant causes those fine particles to bind together into larger clumps — flocs — heavy enough to settle under gravity. The sediment drops to the bottom and the water above clears, in a fraction of the time. The dose depends on the volume of water and how turbid it is.
Where it is used
Farm and site dams clouded by runoff. Settling and sediment ponds on construction and civil sites, where water has to be clarified before it leaves the site. Dewatering — water pumped from excavations, trenches and pits ahead of discharge or reuse.
